Pack House
In 1935 my father felled the trees and floated them to a sawmill to cut the lumber that is in the Pack House. He used a mule and a dray to move the logs to the location where it is now. When I was young, it was home to four mules: Mary, Red, Rock, and Kit. We also stored peanut hay in the loft (a great place for children to play) and corn in the Corn Crib.
Today, it has three unique suites – the Pack House Suite, The Corn Crib, and the Mule Room Suite.
Smoke House
This is my favorite out-building. When I was young it was full of hams, shoulders, and sausage. We had a large stone crock for salt side meat that was used for seasoning. It was a fascinating place. I find it odd that I can’t get anything to grow beside the Smoke House now. I can only imagine that they dumped the used salt here, and there is no one around to ask, so I will never know.
The Chicken Coop is nestled beside the Smoke House. When I was little, we raised chickens and I had to keep the water pail full. I was afraid of the roosters – they were vicious. I wasn’t afraid of the cows or mules – we rode the mules.
